2023 WASSCE : The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will take place from Monday, May 8 to Friday, June 23, 2023.

The HNO of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Mr. Patrick Areghan, made the announcement during a press conference at the Council’s head office in Lagos. Over 1.6 million candidates from 20,851 secondary schools will sit for the examination, which consists of 197 papers in 76 subjects. Candidates will have access to the Candidate Self-Service system via the CHATBOT Platform to confirm their entries and CASS and make necessary corrections. While NIN was made a component of the registration requirement, it was not a compulsory requirement to upload their candidates’ CASS scores. This process has improved the accuracy and reliability of CASS data, which is used to compute candidates’ final grades.

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is an important examination for students in West Africa, and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is committed to ensuring that the examination is conducted fairly and efficiently. With the use of technology and the establishment of the Candidate Self-Service system, the Council is working to eliminate errors and make the examination process smoother for candidates and all stakeholders.

The use of technology has made it possible for the Council to provide platforms to enable schools to capture the CASS scores of their candidates and upload same to the Council, without the need for physical contact with any of its officials.

This move, according to Areghan, is in line with the Council’s commitment to continuously embrace technology for the conduct of its operations. He further added that the Council has been working tirelessly to ensure that its services are easily accessible to candidates and stakeholders, particularly in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In conclusion, the announcement of the commencement of the 2023 WASSCE (SC) by the West African Examinations Council has been met with great enthusiasm and anticipation by students, teachers, and other stakeholders in the education sector. The increased candidature and successful return to the May/June examination period are seen as positive signs of the recovery of the education sector from the disruptions caused by the pandemic. The introduction of the Candidate Self-Service platform and the use of technology in capturing CASS scores are also welcome developments that will further enhance the credibility and efficiency of the examination process.
