JAMB Announces Free Registration for Persons with Disabilities in 2024 UTME

In a bid to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has declared that persons with disabilities aiming to take the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will be registered at no cost. The announcement was made by the Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, during an interactive media session to kickstart the registration process for the upcoming UTME.

Prof. Oloyede emphasized JAMB’s commitment to supporting all categories of persons with disabilities by providing free application documents. This move is geared towards ensuring that financial constraints do not impede the educational aspirations of individuals with disabilities.

In a significant development, the registrar disclosed that audio books would now be made available to blind candidates to create a level playing field. The decision to provide audio books stemmed from recommendations made during the first National Conference on Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education in Nigeria.

Explaining the initiative, Prof. Oloyede noted, “This will help the blind candidates to easily understand the subject/text.” The audio books will be offered in popular formats such as MP3, WMV, and WMA, ensuring compatibility with various devices capable of streaming audio records. Additionally, diagrams will be excluded from questions meant for blind candidates, further enhancing accessibility.

In a move to make study materials more accessible, an electronic copy (e-copy) of the reading text will be provided free of charge for all categories of candidates participating in the 2024 UTME. This step aligns with JAMB’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for all candidates, regardless of their circumstances.

The 2024 UTME registration is set to commence on January 15, with a registration fee of N6,200 for candidates opting out of the mock examination. Candidates participating in the mock examination will pay N7,700 for the registration process. These fee structures reflect JAMB’s dedication to ensuring affordability for all candidates.

As JAMB takes these progressive steps towards inclusivity, it reaffirms its mission to provide a fair and supportive examination environment for all candidates, fostering a more inclusive educational landscape in Nigeria.
